1.9" x 1.3" Soft Enamel Pin Single Posted Rubber Clasp Inspired by "The Dove" by Romare Bearden © 2021 Romare Bearden Foundation / Licensed by VAGA at Artists Rights Society (ARS), NY Romare Bearden (1911-1988) is considered one of the most important American artists of the 20th century, known for depicting facets of African American culture. After struggling between what he saw as his two artistic sides, modernist abstraction on one hand, and figurative reflection of the black experience on the other, Bearden turned away from painting and began experimenting with collage. For "The Dove" (1964), Bearden used cuttings from diverse source material like magazines, newspapers, architectural drawings, and wallpaper, to reconstruct a vibrant New York City street scene, placing bizarrely-scaled objects and disjointed figures into a single plane.
